Hut to Hut Hiking & Yoga Adventure: The Peaks of the Balkans

September 20th-27th 2026

This unforgettable journey through the Balkan Alps is a compact yet immersive trekking and wellness adventure, linking remote mountain villages across Albania, Montenegro, and Kosovo. Over 8 days, you’ll explore dramatic valleys, glacial lakes, and traditional highland communities, experiencing the authentic, untouched spirit of the Accursed Mountains.

A true highlight of this journey is crossing spectacular high mountain passes—including the Peja Pass, Shelega Pass, and the Three Border Summit. Each of these historic routes connects isolated valleys and was traditionally used by local shepherds and traders traveling on horseback—once the only way to move between these rugged borders.

While the full cross-border trail spans 192 km, we have curated a premier 150-km route that captures the absolute best highlights of the region. Considering the area’s turbulent history and once tightly controlled borders, moving freely here was once impossible. Today, these barriers are gone, allowing us to trek seamlessly from hut to hut, combining deep physical adventure with daily mindfulness.

Is This Trip For You?

  • Activity Level: 4 (Moderate Plus / Challenging/Power Hiking)

  • Terrain: This trek is suitable for keen hikers who are prepared to put in some physical preparation before the trip. For the most part, we follow established shepherd trails, though the terrain can be very rocky and steep in alpine sections. Having a professional local guide with us makes navigating these paths seamless and safe.

  • Accommodations: We stay in authentic, locally run mountain guesthouses. While some remote locations are beautifully rustic and may require sharing a bathroom, most offer clean, comfortable beds with private facilities—with many guests finding their warm hospitality genuinely luxurious. In the ultra-remote village of Dobërdol (Day 5), accommodation consists dormitory-style rooms. Guests traveling solo will be grouped by gender.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Albania & Drive to Thethi National Park (Sep 20)

Meet and greet with our guide in  Shkoder—one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, boasting over 2,500 years of history. After group introductions, we begin our journey along a scenic mountain road through the beautiful Boga Valley, the gateway to the Albanian Alps.

We will stop at Qafe Thore (the Diagonal Pass) to take in the spectacular mountain landscape unfolding before us, before descending via a winding switchback road to our lovely guesthouse in the village of Theth. In the afternoon, we will enjoy a short introductory walk into Thethi National Park and gather for our first restorative movement session before a delicious, homemade welcome dinner.

  • Drive: Up to 4 hours

  • Accommodation: Traditional Guesthouse (Theth)

  • Meals Included: Dinner

Day 2: Hike from Theth to Vusanje via Peja Pass (Sep 21)

Today’s trek into Prokletije National Park crosses the border from Albania into Montenegro. We begin on a gravel road toward Okol village before tackling a steep, beautiful zig-zag trail up to the Peja Pass (1,759m).

The path winds through the craggiest, most dramatic peaks of the entire range. This route offers a fascinating glance into the region’s communist past, passing old military border posts and bunkers. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in lush alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers before descending into the valley of Vusanje. We will close the day with a targeted post-hike recovery session to soothe the legs.

  • Trail: ~20 km | Elevation: +900m / -900m | Time: 7–8 hours

  • Accommodation: Guesthouse (Vusanje)

  • Meals Included: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Day Hike: Grebaja National Park & Vajusha Summit (Sep 22)

We start the morning with a short 20-minute drive to the breathtaking Grbaja Valley. The hike begins with a gradual uphill climb through an old beech forest before opening up into stunning alpine meadows. The final push takes us across the ridge to the summit of Taljanka Peak (2,056m).

After a scenic picnic lunch at the summit, we hike back down the ridge with the spectacular, jagged Karanfili mountains directly in front of us—widely considered one of the best views in the entire Balkan region. Note: For those wanting an extra challenge, there is an option to run or walk the remaining 10 km back to the guesthouse instead of taking the transfer.

  • Trail: ~11 km | Elevation: +1,020m / -1,020m | Time: 5–6 hours

  • Accommodation: Guesthouse (Vusanje)

  • Meals Included: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Hike from Vuthaj Village to Valbona Valley via Jezerca Lakes (Sep 23)

A short 4×4 transfer brings us to the trailhead in the Zastan Valley. From here, we follow a steep forested trail up to the magnificent, glacial Jezerca Lakes—the shimmering emerald jewels of the Albanian Alps.

After spending time resting by the water, we climb to the dramatic Shelega Pass (approx. 2,100m) where we cross back into Albania. From the pass, we trek down into the famous Valbona Valley, surrounded by towering limestone peaks, winding down with an evening yoga session at our guesthouse.

  • Trail: ~18 km | Elevation: +1,180m / -1,200m | Time: 7–8 hours

  • Accommodation: Guesthouse (Valbona)

  • Meals Included: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Valbona to Doberdol Pastures (Sep 24)

Following a hearty breakfast and hot mountain tea, a short 35-minute transfer brings us to our trailhead near Çerem. Leaving the massive Kollata block behind, we walk through peaceful, deep forests, stepping briefly across the Montenegrin border before returning to Albania for a lunch break in the tiny, remote hamlet of Balcina.

The afternoon trail is a scenic, mostly flat path through patches of beech forest that gradually climbs into the wide-open alpine pastures of Dobërdol—a rustic, off-grid shepherd village where life has remained unchanged for centuries.

  • Trail: ~16 km | Elevation: +1,025m / -440m | Time: 6–7 hours

  • Accommodation: Rustic Guesthouse (Dobërdol)

  • Meals Included: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Doberdol to Gjeravica Summit & Bjeshka Gacaferve (Sep 25)

An early breakfast sets us up for a majestic ridge hike along the borders of all three countries. We will hit the magical Three Border Summit (2,266m), offering panoramic views of the valleys we’ve crossed over the last few days.

From there, the trail tracks the ridge past Tropoja Lake and Heart Lake before tackling the final ascent to the summit of Mount Gjeravica (2,656m)—the highest peak in Kosovo. After celebrating at the top, we descend to the Gacaferi guesthouse for the night. (Note: Shorter, modified hiking options to Tropoja Lake are available today based on weather and energy levels).

  • Trail: ~18 km | Elevation: +1,050m / -1,050m | Time: 7–8 hours

  • Meals Included: Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Across the Border to Fairy Lake & Plav (Sep 26)

Our final full day on the trail takes us through open, rolling alpine terrain across the green border into Montenegro. Our main destination today is the mystical Hrid Lake (Hrid Jezero), locally known as “Fairy Lake.” Hidden deep within a quiet pine forest, local legend says forest fairies come to bathe here.

We will take plenty of time here to rest, enjoy our picnic, swim in the clear waters, and host a final, beautiful lakeside mindfulness session. From the lake, we descend into Plav, the largest mountain town on our route, where we can celebrate our achievement.

  • Trail: ~25 km | Elevation: +800m / -1,100m | Time: 6–7 hours

  • Accommodation: Guesthouse (Plav)

  • Meals Included: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch, Dinner
